Awaiting the Day
December 4 - Jeremiah 33:14-16
v.14 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.”
My mother taught me to have as many Advent Calendars in the house as children. This ensures everyone has their daily chocolate and an opportunity to move the countdown to Christmas one day closer. You wouldn't believe the Advent chart by which Mom kept track of whose turn it was to perform which task. Advent Candle-snuffer was the most popular job by far.
"Behold, the days are coming..."
Especially significant future days, like Christmas, can feel more real than the present day. So, we talk about "getting into the Christmas spirit," by which a future reality is brought into the present through "spiritual experience." In this way, Christmas Day can feel 600 hours long (25 days) or longer. Someone in our youth group just mentioned falling asleep to Christmas music since September.
"Where are you?"
"I'm 25, 24, 23 days away from the Day of Days!"
Jeremiah declared God would fulfill the promise made to Israel and Judah by raising up a "righteous Branch" from the line of David to reign as King and execute justice and righteousness in the land. The King will be called "The LORD is our righteousness" or "God-Who-Puts-Everything-Right" (The Message translation).
Christians are people who live by faith in the promises of God. For Christians, faith is even more real than sight. If you believe Christ has prepared eternal life for you - eternal life has already begun in a very real sense.
Gracious God, you fulfilled your promise to raise up a King for the salvation of your people. Fill us with joyful expectation of our King's return to execute justice and righteousness for all creation. Amen.
