December 25- Luke 2:8-20
v.19-20 "But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them."
Christmas is a season to treasure and to testify. We treasure the times with loved ones that mark another year's passing. We treasure the memories of Christmases past when our dearly departed sat at the family table. We testify to our children of the meaning of Christmas and the story of the Christ child. We testify to the traditions by which our family celebrates the season.
Mary ponders the gift of her son who has stirred up the angels in heaven and the shepherds on earth. The shepherds return to their fields with a story to tell of the glory of God. Later, wise ones will come bearing treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh and they and Joseph will each receive testimony from angels, warning of King Herod's ensuing terror.
Christmas is not a story of buried treasure, but of testified treasure. The abundance of God's grace is sufficient for you and for me and for the entire human race.
“Where are you? Where will you be?” Christians are people on the go. Today it is our great joy to go tell it on the mountain, over the hills, and everywhere. Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born!
Generous God, you have enriched the poor in spirit with the treasures of heaven. May our testimony of your Son find a hearing in your world, that your kingdom may come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
